Scholarships for Birth Defects and NICU Stays

Are there scholarships available for lesser-known birth defects or lung issues? My son was born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and spent a significant time in the NICU. He now has only half of one lung and about 80% of the other.

We’ve searched online but haven’t found much beyond one foundation specifically for his condition. Most NICU-related scholarships seem geared towards nursing degrees rather than support for children who spent time in the NICU.

It feels like there are scholarships for nearly everything except this specific situation. Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Reach Out to the NICU.

  • Foundation or Alumni Association: Check if the NICU where your son was treated has a foundation or alumni group that offers scholarships. They often have programs to help children who were in the NICU.
  • Social Workers or Nurses: Ask the social workers or nurses who worked with your son for information about scholarships or other resources.

Contact Patient Advocacy Organizations

  • National Organizations: Look for national groups that support children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia or lung issues. They may offer scholarships or know of other resources.
  • Local Chapters: Check local chapters of these organizations in your area for specific scholarships or support programs.

Use Online Scholarship Databases

Look for Government Grants

  • State and Federal Grants: Research grants that might be available for children with disabilities or medical conditions.

Consider Crowdfunding: Use platforms like GoFundMe or Kickstarter to raise funds for educational expenses.
