Any scholarships in the 5k range that people actually get… or are they too hard?

I’m a psych major, and I have a couple of scholarships, but I still had to take out 2 loans (5k together) to cover this year’s tuition. I don’t want to borrow more. Does anyone know of any good scholarships I could actually qualify for? It would be great if I could get the money directly to my account, not to the school, or if the scholarship covers housing. I have a 3.0 GPA. I’m in Houston, TX.

I’d suggest applying for smaller scholarships, like $1000 ones. They’re easier to find and not as competitive. Just apply to anything you can. The payout can take a while, so you’ll need to plan ahead.

Also, have you thought about getting a job or setting up a payment plan? If you break the amount down monthly, it’s not too bad. I’d also talk to financial aid to see if they can help you out.

Someone mentioned credit unions, and I think some banks have scholarships that are easy to apply for. The requirements aren’t too tough.

I would recommend checking out scholarship platforms. They usually have a lot of options listed.

If you have any connection to the Marine Corps, their scholarships are pretty much guaranteed. They’re paid to the school, but I got $5,000. It might be possible to use it for housing, but I didn’t need that. Scholarships that pay directly to you are rare, though, so the only way to get that money is if the scholarship is more than the cost of attendance and you get the refund.

@Joss
Hey, did you actually get all $5,000? If you meet the eligibility requirements, does that guarantee the scholarship? I’m applying for this cycle.

So, I didn’t get the full $5,000 directly back as a refund. It was a combination of other scholarships and grants that covered most of my tuition, and the Marine Corps scholarship helped cover the rest. The refund I got was a mix of aid, but if I didn’t have those, I would’ve only received part of it. As for the guarantee, the website says that everyone who qualifies will get the award, but the application also says it’s not 100% guaranteed, so I’m not totally sure. But I did get it, so it’s possible. Hope that helps, and good luck!

@Joss
Thanks so much! That clears it up!

You’re welcome!

Which Marine Corps scholarships are these? Can you be more specific?

Sorry about that! It’s called the Marine Corps Scholarship. Here’s the website: https://www.mcsf.org/

If you’re LGBTQ+, the Point Foundation offers scholarships that could help.

When do they open again?

When do they open again?

They usually open in the fall, but the BIPOC scholarship opens in February.

Do they require you to submit FAFSA?

I don’t remember if it’s a requirement, but financial need is one of the factors they consider when choosing scholars.

Check out your university’s specific scholarship website. Just type in your college’s name and ‘scholarship universe’.

Yeah, I applied there, but they never seem to work. Plus, they recently took it down, so my school doesn’t have it anymore. It wasn’t very helpful anyway.

@Valen
Try looking into your local credit unions. Sorry I don’t have more advice.
