Anyone else a finalist for the US Senate Youth Program? Need help with interview prep!

Hi everyone, just found out a few hours ago that I’m a finalist for the U.S. Senate Youth Program! I’m honestly surprised because I thought I didn’t do well on the test, but it turns out I passed! Only five of us tested in my district.

So here’s my question: how should I prepare for the interview? The selection committee will interview me, and it’s a six-person panel. I’m comfortable speaking in front of people, but I want to be as prepared as possible. If there are any other finalists, or if anyone who’s done the program before could give some advice, please share! My interview is in two weeks, and I’d love any tips on what to expect!

Hey! Congrats on becoming a finalist! I’m a semi-finalist and taking the test this week. Could you share a bit about what was on your exam? I’d really appreciate it!

Congrats! I was a delegate a few years back, so here’s my advice: don’t overthink it and don’t over-prepare.

The best prep would be talking with teachers, friends, or family members who can ask you questions. Have them ask you about your passion for politics, what got you interested, and about any political activities you’ve been involved in. Questions like:

  • What sparked your interest in government?
  • What’s your long-term goal?
  • How does what you’re doing now fit into that goal?
  • How could the Washington Week program help you reach your goals?
  • What’s the biggest issue your generation is facing, in your opinion?
  • How do you handle discussions with people who have different political beliefs?

They’re looking for someone who can comfortably talk about their path and interests—not someone giving rehearsed answers. Take time to review your essays and resume just to have them fresh in your mind, and try to relax! You’ve already come so far, and your passion will show if you speak honestly.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for this advice! I don’t want to sound too confident, but I feel like talking about my interest in government and politics in person will help me express myself way better than a test ever could. My interview is set for the 14th, so it’s going to be a busy day, but I’m excited to do it. Just hoping it goes well.

(Oh, and for the essay on the test, I wrote about how ranked-choice voting could help better show who voters actually want as their representative. Thanks to Mr. Beat for the inspiration!)
