Are there ethnicity qualifications for the Gates Scholarship?

I’m feeling confused. I’m Ethiopian, and I just saw that the eligibility criteria for the scholarship specify that only African Americans are eligible. Should I look for a different scholarship instead?

Honestly, you might consider marking African American even if it’s not a perfect fit. Many people use “Black” and “African American” interchangeably, and often “African American” is used for political correctness even if it’s not entirely accurate. I doubt the scholarship is intentionally excluding Black individuals who aren’t descendants of enslaved Africans. Just my perspective as an African American.

You were right. On the second page, there was a link with their race definitions, and it simply stated “anyone of African descent.”

As an African student planning to study in the West, I would suggest focusing on scholarships specifically targeted at international students.

I’m ethiopian american I’m not even international. I only have heard of African Americans being AA because they have ancestry of enslaved family members. it says ASIAN AMERICANS like all types of asian but for black it says only AA :sob: but then in the “tell us about you” it says black OR AA :sob::sob::sob: please I can’t

My main issue with scholarships is that you’re not given clear expectations upfront, leading to a lot of wasted time. From what you’ve described, it seems like you fit the criteria for African American/Black. Are you exploring other scholarship options? What other challenges are you encountering in your search?
