Can I apply for a scholarship without my parents knowing?

Hello! I’m 17 years old and excited about applying for a full-ride scholarship for the 2025-2026 academic year in the USA. I understand that these scholarships are highly competitive and often based on financial need, so I’m gathering all the necessary materials. However, I’m facing a challenge. My mom isn’t supportive of my application, and my dad is abroad and someone I don’t feel comfortable contacting. My parents are divorced, and I live with my mom.

The scholarship requires information about both of my parents’ incomes. While I might be able to get that information from my dad, despite him being in a different country, I need to prepare myself for that. I’m unsure how to approach my mom, as she is against the idea of me studying in another country, especially in the USA since we live in Europe. I’m also concerned about potential issues if my parents are unaware of my college application process. I could potentially create their emails if needed (similar to how a friend handled it with their father), but that’s about all I can do. Do you have any suggestions?

Consider contacting the scholarship committee directly for guidance. As a current college student in the US, I’m here to help in any way I can.

Most of the scholarships I’ve applied for require FAFSA information, which is based on financial need. Since I’m returning to school to pivot careers, I used my own income. However, if you’re still living with your parents, you typically need to use their financial information unless you are an emancipated minor.

Yeah, I think I’ll say I need the income documents for something else (I just need to come up with a good reason so she doesn’t suspect anything). Thanks for your comment!

Perhaps you could ask to see her tax forms as part of a homework assignment.

Yeah, that sounds good—thanks a lot!!!
