Help… I owe 5K and don’t know what to do

Hi everyone… I’m really stressed right now. I missed an email back in June that said my scholarships would only cover the fall semester, not spring, because I’ve gone over 120 attempted credits. Now I’m being told I owe $5,000 by January 5th.

This is supposed to be my very last semester—I only need one required class and 5 more credit hours to graduate in May. I feel so frustrated and upset with myself for missing that email. Has anyone dealt with something like this? Any advice would help a lot.

Have you tried filing an appeal with your financial aid office? It might be worth asking if they have any options for you.

I already emailed the scholarship department to ask about reinstating it, but they told me the fall semester was already an exception, so they can’t extend it to spring. I feel like I’m out of options :face_with_spiral_eyes:

@Tamsin
Was the issue because of too many attempted credits, or was it tied to something else?

Have you looked into grants? If it’s about taking too many units, you might be able to appeal that. I had a similar issue at my community college—they wanted to pull my grants, but I appealed by explaining my major required extra credits, and they accepted it. Try speaking with someone else in financial aid and check if your school has an aid portal.

If that doesn’t work, look into a deferred payment plan. It’s not ideal, but it could be your best option right now.
