Hi everyone, I’m trying to find scholarships that can help me with my living and resident fees. Does anyone have suggestions? The FAS doesn’t cover these costs. My GPA is 4.8 and I plan to take the SAT on November 2.
Here are some scholarships that cover living and residential fees:
- Stamps Scholarship – This one covers full tuition plus extra funds for living expenses and enrichment activities at partner schools.
- Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation – They award $20,000 scholarships that can be used for tuition, housing, and living expenses. It’s pretty competitive and prestigious.
- Horatio Alger Scholarship – This offers large awards for students with financial need, and the funds can be used for both tuition and housing.
Pay close attention to the wording in the scholarships. My son got enough money this year to cover both this year and next. If a scholarship says it’s for tuition only, then the school will apply it to tuition. But many scholarships say they cover educational expenses, books, fees, and more. If they mention that, then the school might apply it to the total bill, which includes dorm and meal plans. It really comes down to how they word it. The leftover money this year will be moved to next year when my son registers for the fall.
Good luck! Not many scholarships cover living expenses. The IRS treats scholarships for tuition and related costs as non-taxable, but living expenses and meal plans aren’t considered related for tax purposes. This means you would have to claim it as income, but the charity can’t claim it either. That’s why so many scholarships are tuition only.
