Oxford University as a Low-Income Student from the US… What Are My Options?

I’m from Kentucky, and I’ve always thought going to Oxford would be an amazing chance for me. I’ve got a 32 on the ACT and several 5s on my AP exams. I’m planning to take the SAT soon, and I’m aiming for a 1500 or better.

The problem is, I don’t have a college fund, and my family doesn’t make much money. I know some American colleges offer great scholarships, but does Oxford or any UK-based organizations have scholarships that could help if I get accepted?

If you’re interested in Oxford, you should definitely apply. You can worry about the financial stuff if you get in. There are resources out there that can help with funding, but you won’t know what’s possible until you try.

@Drew
They have a really strong environmental science program, which is what I’m interested in.

Congrats on your hard work! I was in a similar situation when I was applying to schools, so I know how tough it can be. Keep pushing—your effort will pay off.

Thanks! My brother got into Johns Hopkins, so I’m staying hopeful.

One idea is to look for US colleges with exchange programs linked to Oxford. Schools like Sarah Lawrence, Stanford, and Williams have them. This way, you could get a taste of Oxford as an undergrad and then apply for a Master’s there later when there’s more funding available.

@Kenan
That sounds like a solid plan, thanks!

There’s usually a lot more scholarship money for international students at the graduate level. You might want to keep that in mind and consider going to Oxford for a Master’s instead.

Totally agree! It might be better to focus on undergrad here in the US and aim for scholarships for grad school at Oxford. You’ll find more opportunities that way.

@Lane
I appreciate the advice!

Good luck! If you do decide to go for a Master’s in the UK, let us know after graduation. We’ll help you find scholarships for sure.

So you’re saying I should focus on graduate school instead of undergrad at Oxford?

@Tan
Yes, it’s usually easier to get funding for grad school. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look into undergrad options. Keep researching because there might be funding sources I don’t know about.

@Kenan
I found some options, but they seem to be more about foreign exchange programs.
