I’m an MD/PhD student, and I can’t figure out why I’m not being awarded national scholarships or awards. I have extensive advocacy experience, strong essays, strong letters of recommendation, good grades (my school is pass/fail), and unique career ambitions. It’s frustrating and exhausting, especially when I see others being awarded who have accomplished less.
One thing I’ve been considering is whether my CV might seem “unbelievable.” I’ve achieved significant things at a national level in advocacy and science, and I’m worried that these accomplishments might be perceived as exaggerations or lies. This concern arose after an advisor once suggested I remove something from an application because she thought it was a hyperbole—until I provided evidence that I had indeed led a policy statement for an NGO. Since then, I’ve wondered if this perception might be hurting my chances.
I’m now getting professional help with my essays for the fall, but I’m still worried and frustrated about putting in so much effort and receiving nothing in return.
Does anyone have advice or has anyone experienced something similar? What changed to make you successful? Or am I just doomed with bad luck and should consider dropping out?
